This process is done through a tool(grinder) which run through air pressure, depth of the grinding totally  depends on pressure applied in required area manually and carefully, uniformity is very important in this process cause many times hand shakes disturb the process 

Process of Fraying and Distress

In fraying and distress, in required area, with knife or tool, scratching applied and then heavy air pressure  applied so that thread gets removed from that area. This process can be done after wash as well as before wash also.
